Erica Sunshine Lee releases new EP "SOUTHERN AMENDMENT"

Erica Sunshine Lee exercises her right to speech and bear arms in her new "SOUTHERN AMENDMENT" EP(the GA Country Female Artist of the Year's 6th album), featuring her fan favorite "GIRLS WITH GUNS."  The southern rock grit brings to life her real country upbringing, taunting trespassers to BEWARE if they DARE!  The album kicks off with an uptempo rocking banjo number about jealousy and pushing a wife over the edge to do whatever she has to do, including kill, to keep her man.  The catchiness and 'danceability' of track two is undeniable, where Lee brilliantly claims she wants to work it out and hang on to love, no matter what she has to do, because she doesn't want to become 'Another Sad Love Song.'  Leaving Atlanta is a somber ballad that can bring tears to even the most stone cold soul, as she loads down her car to head out west, but is torn between her past and future.

Girls with Guns would make any Texan proud, and any female for that matter, to defend themselves, and, not that Sunshine is claiming violence, but rather the need to protect her home and herself at all costs.  This well rounded EP concludes with an exceptionally honest country tune, bearing all, and her vulnerability with alcohol, stating she had begun to lean on the bottle instead of the Bible, after some years of straying to a less than reliable source, and has now turned her focus back to God.  Erica Sunshine Lee is a true prolific songwriter, bringing meaning in every word and soul in every note, captivating the essence of a story, which is what country music is all about, right?

"This girl can SING!" -Sleeping Bag Studios gives RAVE REVIEW for ESL's 5th album!

Erica Sunshine Lee – The South Will Rise Again – Album Review

You know…sometimes just a few words can make the entire difference…

That would be the case in this late-night review coming out on the music of Erica Sunshine Lee; I didn’t know her to look anything different than these very words that you’re looking at onscreen here now. I was lucky enough to chat briefly with Erica as I received this album, and by chat I mean of course a paragraph or so of text from this future country-music star. Giving some brief insight into the album and the songs, much of this was inspired by the tornados that have stricken the U.S., but more-so the ability for all of us to come together in the face of tragedy. The idea of getting back out there…and carrying on; rebuilding.

This was all compelling backstory…but it was the humble, sweet nature of this ‘country-girl’ that was impressing me…something about the way she was relating the story. She might hate me for quoting this here…but here goes anyway….

…”Real life and real stories are what I write…”

Now…I have relatively very little experience as a country-girl. Nearly 99.9% of the time, my bearded face and ruffles of chest-hair seem to give me away. But you want to know what’s REALLY strange? Not only am I typically NOT a country-music fan…but I really like what I’m hearing from Erica Sunshine Lee. The way she’s put forth her experiences from the last two years of her life into the lyrics of this record, well, I feel like if I close my eyes I can truly imagine through her words was it WOULD be like to be a country-girl…

That being said, there are definitely two sides to Erica Sunshine Lee. You’ve got the energetic pop/country tracks of the modern day, and you’ve also got a lot of completely authentic songs that hearken back to the country-classics of old. In any of these cases, Erica is literally flawless. She’s currently based in Nashville yes; but let’s just say there’s not a single shred of evidence upon the album that would give you a clue as to otherwise – this is as Nashville as Nashville gets! And by that, I mean that, as much as I LOVE the music that comes from that place…they’re in a lot of ways playing with a limited word-count; much of what you’ll hear from Erica Sunshine Lee are concepts that you’d expect to exist within country-music. And with THAT being said…who honestly cares when it all comes out this incredibly anyhow? As I had mentioned in the recent review on Chris Weaver Band, clichés can exist for plenty of valid reasons…and generally those occurring in music are experienced by many and represented by only a few voices from a stereo speaker. Sometimes when we need to hear them the most, even though we might have heard that advice before, because these themes are often repetitive in ANY genre, not just hers, it exists for us when we need it the most because we STILL need to hear it.

That’s real life right Erica Sunshine Lee? Believe me – you’ll hear it on this album, it’s undeniable just how much these songs truly are based in her real life experience. What’s completely NOT ‘real-life’ – are these incredible performances she gives, or the hooks that she’s written. Erica is truly a superstar in the making, and an honorary resident of the Nashville scene by now I have no doubt.

Why? Cause modern-day country-fans you LOVE songs like “Girls Night Out,” and she starts the album off with high-energy and catchy hooks right off the bat. But don’t even TRY to tell me that you don’t love that stuff country-people! YOU DO SO. Songs like “Holler If You’re Blue Collar,” could just as easily be the equivalent of a “Save The Horse” music-craze, of this I have no doubt.   Haven’t had enough yet? NO – you haven’t! I know it and so do YOU. So go listen to “All My Bucks Go To Starbucks,” and get yourself through the drive-thru on the way to work. “How Bout Them Dawgs?”

What surprised me…was how authentic some of these other tunes came out…how amazing some of the tones she created were and what a sincere and honest performance she gives throughout. I mean seriously – this girl can SING, and she’s got the best of the best making music to back these songs…it’s all coming out perfectly.

The South Will Rise Again, and more than likely demand an encore if she wants to continue on making music with as much heart, quality and enthusiasm as she clearly is. The title-track of this album…is just flat-out phenomenal. Don’t even question me on it, just go and listen, even if you’re not a country fan…there’s so much sorrow, pain, emotion, love, redemption…it’s like an entire Nicholas Sparks movie-plot within one song, all based from her real-life experience. It’s hard not to hear this as the major highlight of the album…it’s like a flawless diamond…or staring into a nebula or something else extraordinarily beautiful. Erica is nailing it here, in a performance strong even to bring in crossover fans, just like myself now. This captivating song and powerhouse of emotion is a real strength on this album, and certainly spotlights the incredible song-writing of Erica Sunshine Lee.

The track that might have impressed me more than any other on this album…was “Maybe That’s When You’ll Notice I’m Gone.” Now…I’ve already said this many times, you know I’m not a country-music fan overall…and that’s an important distinction to make, the ‘overall’ part. I have listened, and will always listen, to the best of the best in any genre…any of those famous greats are truly legends and my list is never-ending of the people I’m thankful for blazing the trail for us all. But one of those greats…is certainly the timeless music of Dolly Parton herself…and I know I’m not crazy when I hear a young Dolly here in Erica’s voice on this song. She confirmed it for me when she followed it with “Drinking For Two.” That song also reminds me of Dolly’s tender tremble in her voice…Erica has amazing control over her vocals and knows how to get the most out of every note. But like people knew with Dolly Parton long before it all actually happened for her…much the same I believe could be true of Erica Sunshine Lee…I really think we’re possibly witnessing the early days of a massive country superstar in the future to come. And if these are her starting blocks, she’s going to have a very short walk to fame and stardom.

Lastly…I’ll comment on the genius track that is “Chunky Dunk.” This is about the most amazing inclusion I’ve ever heard on an album of this caliber. Seriously…if this doesn’t speak to just how ‘real’ of an artist Erica truly is, I don’t know what else could. Any pretentious bullshit country-star would have NEVER had the courage to include this on such a pristine and beautiful album. This song sounds like a basement-demo…and MAN is it refreshing to hear someone of this extreme talent just take a moment out of the stadium to have a very real moment with all of us.

I gotta say Erica Sunshine Lee…you get a big thumbs up from me. I’m not about to go out and get myself a cowboy hat anytime soon…but there’s certainly nothing that’s going to stop me from talking about YOU when someone asks me what AMAZING country-music I’ve come across through my work at sleepingbagstudios. I’ll bend the rest of the ears you don’t reach yourself my friend…but from what I’m hearing on this album, well…I think you’ll do just fine getting their attention on your own. This entire album is one huge, massive hit-single all packed into one.

Erica Sunshine Lee performs @ The TAMWORTH COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2015

Well after 14 shows this week, I had a great time performing at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, for the 3rd year at Australia's Largest Music Festival! Thanks to The Albert Hotel, The PUB, Longyard Hotel, The Frog and Toad Convention Center, The Services Club, Peel River Gardens and the Fanzone Stage. Thanks to Mitchell Shadlow for the awesome performances, guitar playing, being my taxi and best mate. Thanks to my band and to all the fans for showing up and supporting live original country music!  Thank you Wendy for hosting us at the villa, to the Viper Creek Band for the guest spot at the Longyard singing our duet "YOU SAVED ME", and the hilarious and talented performer Bob Corbett for the impromptu jam at the PUB! I'm so excited to announce today WJO is releasing my first Australian single: "YOU SAVED ME!"  Download now on iTunes, and request at your local Australian country music station! Here's the music video shot in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia by the amazing Matt Gill: My HIGHLIGHTS THIS YEAR @ TAMWORTH aside from performing, were seeing the ADAM ECKERSLEY BAND (winners of the Golden Guitar for Best New Band), hearing the Viper Creek Band rock out the Longyard, writing songs with the amazing Garrett Kato (Canadian, now Byron Bay singer/songwriter with the most amazing voice), the incredible Melbourne based Waz E. Band - whose accordian player was insane, and Texas Native Doug Bruce, who made me so proud to be a country singer. There are so many other bands I didn't get to see because of my rigorous schedule, but I also found the best restaurant in Tamworth, the hidden gem called "THE SQUARE MAN INN," and the food was so decadent and homemade, in addition to the coziest and most scenic ambiance. Thank you again to all the folks who came to the festival and made this week so much fun, and I will forever remember these shows and all the people who made an effort to come see and hear me play in this awesome country!  Hope to be back next year! With the release of her 1st US Single, Erica Sunshine Lee's song "Georgia For This" is catching attention across the US debuting on the Music Row Charts at #133, and she kicks off her US "GEORGIA FOR THIS" RADIO TOUR in Hawaii, where Makani in the Morning raves about her new single, and down home personality. Sunshine is called "The Hardest Working Woman in Country Music", and there's no question why, because of her uncompromising work ethic, prolific songwriting skills, and ability to capture any audience with her heartfelt ballads or with her sense of humor that shines in her catchy infectious hooks. Sunshine tells the background story of her new single "GEORGIA FOR THIS." "I met Joe Denim through a mutual friend one night, and we got to jam at his house, a few months later when I got back into town (Nashville), I set up a writing appointment. Joe Denim is an incredible songwriter and a hilarious comedian, so we clicked right off the bat with our outgoing personalities. Sitting in my living room by Piercy Priest Lake, I was telling him about how I grew up in a small town in northeast Georgia, Elberton, the granite capital of the world, and after high school, I moved out to San Francisco. I was so different from my California friends who ate healthy salads, sushi, and avocado, and told him I'm much more of a fried catfish and steak kinda gal, and the song was born. Reminiscing about growing up and hanging out on Clark Hill Lake back near my hometown, and riding on my Papa Joe's pontoon, enjoying a nice Atlanta staple, Cherry Coke...and the rest is history. I love my years spent in California, so it's all tongue and cheek, because it's now my 2nd home, but there's nothing that can take the place of HOME. We worked up such an appetite that after we finished the song, we celebrated with some fried catfish over at PIRATE COVE, a restaurant at Elm Hill Marina near my home."

From Honolulu, Hawaii, to Atlanta, Georgia, to Des Moines, Iowa, to Prairie Du Chien and Platteville, Wisconsin, and hitting up a total of 40 states, 100 radio stations in the next two months, this independent artist is a remarkable example of how hard work pays off. Primary URL:

In the spirit of musical justice (as I find is severely lacking these days), I gave this latest CD from Erica Sunshine Lee a good and proper listen and not only did I not hate it, but I actually kind of fell in love with it, and subsequently Lee in the process. Appropriately this gal is based out of Georgia. First the music therein is a bit more Modern-Country than Past-Rock so it’s not as tacky as I was expecting. It’s really a good combination of both sounds. I can hear influences ranging from Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Dixie Chicks, Sara Evens and Jo Dee Messina. Most of the music is straight up Americana Country Rock but much of it contains impressive into, outros, long musical segments and much in the way of musical angulations which I love.  The lyrics aren’t as annoying or sickly as I thought they would be. Vocals by Lee flutter around like a butterfly but at times. She commands a powerful tonal registry all the while maintaining impressive finesse and control.  Erica Sunshine Lee melds and blends all of the above together in a starkly unique way. The end result? A new sound with an old classic feel. Reading from the words of past reviewers this is the clear consensus. How shall I sum up the sound of Erica Sunshine Lee for you? How about ground breaking? Citing her bio I think this sums it up well: Edgy, controversial titles, catchy and infectious melodies and hooks, genuine country music, with a variety of styles, subjects from love, heartache, tragedy, rebuilding of towns, hearts and southern pride integrated with unfiltered, raw southern sass. While actually sounding like she’s not so over produced like some of the more modern sounding artists  out there like Sugar land and Lady Antebellum. Lee delivers a sound that is old yet surprisingly fresh all at the same time. There are legions of fans waiting for her. Many of these retro tracks sounding surprisingly innovative, which makes up for their somewhat dated influences. From track 1-3 the album turns decidedly upwards and serves up 13 tracks in all. All songs will get your blood pumping. My favorite songs are the ones that add fuel to the fire “Girls Night Out”, “Holler if You’re Blue Collar”, “Chunky Dunk” “How Bout Them Dawgs”. The first three tracks (Girls Night Out), (Georgia For This) and (Everyone Loves a Country Girl) hit hard. My favorite track is probably a toss up between “Holler if You’re Blue Collar” and “Drinking for Two”. All songs are like vivid bursts of energy. The Musicianship from all involved is World Class and the productions strokes are Professional grade. In conclusion there are 3 things I really like about this latest release from Lee. For one I didn’t want to shoot with my pen my myself like I do with most new country bands and artists from Georgia, Two: this CD may be the most impressionable, cheerful, magical and artistic CD’s I’ve heard this  year. Third: Lee and her production team has the courage to write and play music the way she want to, the way it was meant to. A far cry from the “sell out” corporate puppet show bands the masses are scratching their heads at. Whereas 90% of the bands could care less about this approach as they just want to make labels happy. This is one of the most important attributes for me when reviewing music. This CD by Erica Sunshine Lee has no weaknesses and is if you think about it – is 100% compatible with the title “The South Will Rise Again”

"The South Will Rise Again" by Erica Lee (2014) has much to commend it. I really liked this excerpt from her bio: "Two years ago, I was in New Zealand touring. I bought a plane ticket to go to Australia's largest country music festival. I booked an interview at a radio station, and flew into Coffs Harbour, caught a ride to Tamworth, not knowing a soul, I ended up meeting almost every Australian artist that week, played 9 shows, sold 140 cds, and had the time of my life crashing on an air mattress at a stranger's RV in the middle of the Outback. I can't wait to return to this awesome festival and share my new album and songs with all my Australian friends! Why do I like it? Because it's a snapshot of someone who lives their life for music.

Admittedly, there is a whole lot of variety to these arrangements and performances. First: Lee's impressive band delivers rock solid playing. This is testament to hundreds of hours of rehearsal time no doubt. Second: Lee's warm and sultry voice is the perfect fit for this writing style. Lee has the attributes required of an effective country singer. Third: Lee's sound and amazing songwriting touch are as good as it gets. All songs are a skillful combination of modern country pop rock yet with a slight Georgia aftertaste that will remind you of the usual suspects from The Dixie Chicks to The Judds, Deana Carter, Kellie Pickler, and Lili McCann. Lee has the look but also the drive, creativity and songwriting prowess to be extremely dangerous behind the microphone. There's also a unique quality to this catalogue that breaks the mold when compared to the mundane country pop-rock that's been filling the airwaves lately. What am I trying to say well let me start by saying there is nothing fake and superficial about Erica Lee. Not every square inch is filled with musical ambience delivered under duress but musical space this allows the music to breathe on its own and vocal passion that cannot be faked. Equally as impressive is how marketable this 13 song catalogue truly is. It covers so much ground and despite this it manages to not spread itself to thin across to many lines - nice touch. I've always said if you can play it a party, then it's marketable. The music of Lee is extremely marketable - with a fresh Bluesy-Country-Pop-Rock sound that is passionate and entertaining. All 13 tracks will genuinely lift your spirits unlike most music you hear on the radio these days.

At first I did not like the album title, that is until I heard the song. Then I quickly changed my mind as it was not what I expected.

Let me go on record by saying this latest release from Erica Lee has no real notable weaknesses that I can hear. Her latest release "The South Will Rise Again" is an endearing album limited by nothing. I would imagine in time we will hear more from this vocalist originally from Georgia as the years unfold. Time will tell but I can honestly say this is one artist that is set up for marketable success down the road with respect to her vocal style and approach. All of this gives modern day Country-Pop-Rock well deserved wake up call.

Erica Sunshine Lee, The South Will Rise Again

This the 5th studio release from Lee “The South Will Rise Again” by Georgia based Erica Sunshine Lee  is sure to be remembered as one of the classic female pop CD’s in recent memory. Its pure femme fatale magic the way it used to be, full of cautionary tales, passion and of course love’s mystery with a southern twang. So who is Lee anyway? Her music is hard to put in a generalized genre, but she incorporates elements of indie, rock, country, soul, folk, and even pop. Lee’s positive attitude along with her good time sultry sound, good pure look, conscious lyrics and high-energy stage presence radiate pure soul! When one hears Lee for the first time, it will take the listener from a culture of despair and deliver them to a culture of hope! Her music, along with her sweet and compassionate smile, combined with her angelic voice, will remind you of good times while taking you to another dimension of bliss & harmony. In my own words she’s a singer/songwriter who draws on life’s experiences from both the interior and exterior vantage point. Her musical narrative and impassioned lyrics deliver sincere and genuine vocal performances. From the first seconds of Track 1”Girls Night Out” to the final moments of “How Bout Them Dawgs” this CD hits on all cylinders with a powerful musicallandscape full of power and intrigue. One thing that impressed me the most about this album/band is the wide range of emotions Lee covers. There’s also a Bible Belt ambience that really sucks in the listener reminiscent of classic Lady Antebellum, Sheryl Crow, Shania Twain,Faith Hill, Le Ann Rimes and Carrie Underwood.

Lee is backed up by some solid players and production folk giving her latest CD the highest potential for success. Despite this Lee does not have a vocal ability that will stop you in your tracks, though she does bring many other impressive skill sets to the table. This is her 5th release and she strikes me as a very hard working, consistent artist worthy of attention and praise. She is pre and genuine and does not look like a bit tainted by the grind of the business. Need I say more? The CD is professional grade any way you look at it. The instrumentation and tones give you that genuine feel of good music and writing from a generation ago is still alive. Lee has a strong visual and her voice sounds as if she was marinated in Southern charm. She also plays guitar and at times will remind you of Cheryl Crow. All members in her band are solid musically. Kudos goes out to the amazing songwriting – all songs are solid.

I always said you can sell what you don’t truly believe, Here Lee manages to capture lighting in a bottle that will ring true not only for older more experienced listeners but new ones as well. My favorite tracks: “Train Wreck”, Georgia for This”, All I Can Give” and the title track. “The South Will Rise Again” wraps up a well rounded 13 track set by Erica Sunshine Lee that delivers an interesting cross section of classic country-pop and female singer/songwriter. Despite this it is accessible to modern day listeners as well. How is this possible? Only an experienced artist armed with an honest, genuine, sincere approach can pull it off – that artist is Erica Sunshine Lee.

Weakness: More Vocal Mojo and vocal risk taking

Erica Sunshine Lee just released her latest release “The South Will Rise Again” in 2014. From songs about true love, broken hearts, and honest stories from her childhood, family life, to that famous "Walk of Shame", she holds nothing back in her writings. It was common for the underage vocalist to sneak into bars to sing karaoke every night of the week after working 80 hours per week as the leading car salesman for 7 years. Whether she's in her Cadillac driving across the US, touring internationally with her band, or writing songs in her living room, you can rest assured there's a bright future for SUNSHINE.

The CD kicks things off with the “Girls Night Out” a rock steady intro groove that serves up rocked out guitar, well-crafted melody and reckless vocal presence from Lee. This first track is like an inviting welcoming mat and makes a great first impression upon the listener. Track 2 shifts gears a bit with striking “Georgia For This” rocking guitar driven follow-up piece that serves up impressive musical build, thought provoking lyrical content against a feel good vocal delivery from Lee. Track 3: “Everyone Loves a Country Girl” shows us even more songwriting brilliance from Lee. This piece showcases a impressive songwriting prowess, melodic vocal presence and well placed Americana instrumentation along the way. As the CD slowly unfolds I can hear many musical textures reminiscent of classic vocal acts as Melissa Etheridge, Alannah Myles, Deana Carter, Sheryl Crow, Dixie Chicks, Shania Twain, Melissa Etheridge, and even Jewel. The music itself combines classic elements of R&B with an aftertaste of Soul and Contemporary Americana Country. The musicianship of everyone involved is clearly above the bar. You will also notice lush layers musical instrumentation layered everywhere which besides the 4 piece standard includes Pedal Steel, Banjo, Fiddles, Harmonica, Accordion, Piano, Organ, impressive solo guitar, lush harmonies all built upon a thick as a brick rhythm section. The CD has some truly impressive moments on it showcasing impressive songwriting, world class instrumentation via Lee’s appealing Mezzo-Soprano. Zeroing in now on Lee – her voice goes down smooth as she makes the vital (singer to listener) with her swagger and persona. She also showcases a crystal clear vibrato. Her voice reminds me a lot of Reba Macintyre and Dolly Parton. Lee can hold your attention well during some of the CD’s solitary moments as well. Lee has a good look and sound and is one artist worthy of your attention and praise. All engineering aspects check out well. CD possess thick low end punch and crystal clear high end clarity. From the heartfelt title track and “Train Wreck’ to defiant “Holler if You’re Blue Collar” and thought provoking “Maybe That’s when you’ll Notice” to jumpy ‘All my Bucks go to Starbucks” and rocking “Chunky Dunk” to melodic “All I Can Give” track this CD has something for juts about everyone. Track 10 “You Saved Me” features The Viper Creek band). CD ends with Track 13 “How Bout Them Dowgs” the prefect finale statement for a CD like.

All songs over 3.5 minutes tend to drag you to the finish line. Lee needs to let loose a bit more within  the studio environment, take more vocal chances here and there and bring more vocal mojo to the table overall. She's got it in her. She really needs to let it all hang out behind the glass and take more vocal risks. During the finale moments of her music she also needs to seize the moment and deliver more raw vocal power and emotion. Lee comes on a bit strong vocally during other segments and as a result fails to build her vocal performance as the song moves forward. Great vocalist build their performance so it's compatible with the flow and ebb of the song.

From start to “The South Will Rise Again” is an amazing collection of songs from Erica Sunshine Lee. Note for note, song for song there isn’t really a weak piece on this entire catalogue. All pieces are short and sweet musical experiences, each one possessing its own signature groove, and musical personality to call its own. Erica Sunshine Lee is an infectious artist with a good look and sound. She knows how to write and sing you a powerful song and occupy a special place in your heart win the process. Looks like good time country is back.
